New ‘Snow White’ Not as Bad as People Say

Mirror, mirror on the wall, is the new “Snow White” good at all? Critics seem to agree that while it may not be a poisoned apple, it’s not quite the fairest of them all either.

Disney’s latest live-action remake, hitting theaters Friday, stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. While pre-release controversies swirled around casting choices and actors’ comments, the film itself appears to have landed somewhere in the middle ground.

Zegler shines as Snow White, capturing the princess’s gentle nature and bringing a modern sensibility to the role. Critics praise her singing and acting, suggesting she’s a star on the rise.

Gadot’s Evil Queen, however, receives more mixed reviews. While some appreciate her campy portrayal, others find the character underwritten and lacking the imposing presence of the animated original.

The film updates the classic story. Prince Charming is replaced by Jonathan, a Robin Hood-esque bandit, creating a more dynamic relationship with Snow White. However, the CGI dwarfs, described as “magical creatures,” have drawn criticism for their uncanny appearance.

The new songs by Pasek and Paul also divide critics. While some additions, like “Princess Problems” and “All Is Fair,” are praised for their cleverness and audacity, others find the updated score a mixed bag.

Overall, “Snow White” seems to be a more palatable offering than some of Disney’s other live-action remakes, though it’s unlikely to convert those weary of the CGI-heavy trend. With a Rotten Tomatoes score currently at 47%, it seems the film’s fate rests with the general audience.

Will they find this reimagining enchanting, or simply a pale imitation of the animated classic? Only time will tell.
