San Diego County’s tuberculosis rate exceeds state and national levels

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Public health officials are sounding the alarm about the prevalence of tuberculosis in San Diego County.

Monday marks World Tuberculosis Day, a campaign aimed at raising awareness about the impact of TB. The San Diego County Administration Center will join other buildings around the world lit red in honor of World TB Day.

According to San Diego County Public Health Services, TB is an infectious disease that mostly affects the lungs and is transmitted from person to person through the air. People can also get sick with a form of TB when they eat unpasteurized dairy, officials added in a news release.

Data collected last year shows that the county’s TB rate outnumbered the rate in California as a whole. County health officials said it was also higher than the TB rate in the entire U.S…
