Tulsa shelters overwhelmed as homelessness rises amid inflation and natural disasters

TULSA, OKLA (KTUL) — Organizations that help Tulsa’s most vulnerable community say homelessness is on the rise and expect those numbers to climb as food and other prices keep inflating.

“Our reservations have been up dramatically,” Brent McQuarters, the executive director for the Center of Hope at the Salvation Army, said.

He adds, the first three months of 2025, in comparison to this time last year, the demand for help from individuals or families is up 10%. Between the price of housing going up, inflation at the pump and grocery stores, people losing jobs, and the impacts of what’s happening nationally, he said it’s causing the Salvation Army to see the growing need…
