Hiawatha to kick off $400,000 ADA ramp project

HIAWATHA, Iowa (KCRG) – The City of Hiawatha will soon begin the final phase of a decade-long project to ensure the city’s sidewalk ramps are accessible.

Through August, the city will be working to update 29 ramps to ensure they meet standards outlined through the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project is expected to cost $400,000.

Those updates could be making sure water doesn’t collect in a ramp or making sure they’re not too steep, among other things. While those changes may seem slight, for a person using a wheelchair they can make a world of difference…
