“The Art of Judith Lowry” exhibit opens in Reno

On March 22, a new exhibit opened at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno: The Art of Judith Lowry. Lowry is a contemporary artist of Mountain Maidu, Pit River, Washoe and Euro-Australian descent. She is known for her vivid surrealist paintings exploring themes of family and Indigenous history and culture. The large solo retrospective exhibition brings together works from a variety of private collections and museums across the United States. Scenes and stories of Lassen and Plumas counties predominate.

“When I walked in I was overwhelmed” — by seeing so many of her own works collected in one place, said Lowry. “I hadn’t really thought I had this much output. I guess I had some kind of discipline.”

To reach the exhibit, visitors first pass through another new display, “Of the Earth,” featuring pottery and basketry from the museum’s permanent collection. A highlight is a new mural by Jack Malotte, working in collaboration with Lena Tseabbe Wright, both Indigenous Nevada artists. “Mentoring is really important in our culture,” Lowry said. “I love to see new young artists like that.”…
