LUBBOCK, Texas — Ricky Cerna, 17, and Jacob Hernandez, 19, were arrested following a shooting incident on Tuesday.
According to a Probable Cause affidavit, police were called to the 2700 block of 50th Street for reports of gunshots in the area. Cerna and Hernandez fled the scene, Cerna carrying a black backpack. An officer first pursued the suspects in a police unit, then eventually on foot. The Lubbock Police Department then apprehended Cerna.
Security footage from a nearby restaurant saw Hernandez and Cerna flee northbound through the parking lot. It appeared Cerna threw the backpack towards the north fence in an attempt to prevent officers from finding it. While he was taken into custody, Hernandez went to the vehicle and took the backpack, the affidavit said. Next, he concealed the backpack under a vehicle just north of the original location. Shortly after, Hernandez again grabbed the backpack and dropped it behind a fence on the north side of the parking lot, once again trying to hide the item from officers.
During this, LPD received another call for a person shot near 50th Street and University Avenue. Security footage from a business in that area showed Cerna and Hernandez “staring aggressively” at a victim. The victim drove away but was seen returning shortly after.
