Oregon Hot Springs Trip: Not Fancy, But Fun

A Cozy Winter Escape to Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs Resort

For my husband’s 40th birthday, we decided to ditch the usual party scene and head for the newly renovated Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Spring Resort on the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon. Reopened in the summer of 2024 after a period of closure, the resort, located about two hours southeast of Portland, promised a relaxing weekend soaking in natural mineral water, surrounded by close family and friends.

A Winter Wonderland All to Ourselves

Our visit coincided with a snowy Pacific Northwest weekend, which meant we practically had the whole place to ourselves! Our room, while basic, was perfectly comfortable and conveniently located near the parking lot.

At $109 a night for a king bed (booked five months in advance!), it felt more like a motel than a luxury hotel, but the easy access for unloading our two cats (for a $50 pet fee) and luggage was a definite plus. With taxes and travel insurance, the total cost came to around $300.

While the resort offers a range of lodging options, including riverside RV spots and teepees, these weren’t exactly appealing in the December chill. We stuck with the cozy indoors.

Amenities Galore (Even in Winter)

Despite some summer activities being unavailable (horseback riding, mini golf, and disc golf will have to wait for another trip), there was still plenty to do. We enjoyed the heated pools and hot tubs filled with mineral water from the natural hot springs, and even splurged on a private riverside cabana with its own adjustable hot tub for a mere $70 – worth every penny!

The resort’s cafeteria served up delicious meals and snacks, including a must-try huckleberry fry bread. Poolside service was a fantastic perk, allowing us to enjoy nachos, burgers, and wine without leaving the warmth of the water.

Beyond the Resort: Exploring Local Culture

We took a break from soaking to explore the nearby Museum at Warm Springs. For a reasonable $7 per adult and $6 for seniors, we delved into the rich Indigenous history of the area and admired beautiful displays of local art and crafts. I even snagged a hand-felted Pendleton baby blanket for my kittens from the well-stocked gift shop.

A Birthday Weekend to Remember

Kah-Nee-Ta offered a unique blend of relaxation and adventure, even in the heart of winter. The peaceful atmosphere, friendly staff, and the sheer joy of soaking in natural hot springs made for an unforgettable birthday celebration. While we missed out on some summer activities, it just gives us an excuse to return and experience Kah-Nee-Ta in a different season!
