Florida ‘super speeders’ could lose their cars under new bill

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A new bill aims to crack down on Florida drivers who have the need for extreme speed.

The legislation, SB-1782 , would impose penalties on drivers who exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more.

The first offense would result in a $2,500 fine, a six-month license suspension and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The second offense would result in a $5,000 fine, a 30-day impoundment and drivers could have their license suspended for an entire year.

Orange County Sheriff John Mena told NBC affiliate WESH that he has seen a huge uptick in extreme speeders. His deputies cited 101 drivers for going 100 mph or more in January, compared to just 29 at the same time last year…
