General Assembly to reconvene on Youngkin’s amendments, vetoes

The General Assembly will reconvene Wednesday to decide whether to adopt or reject Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s proposed amendments to legislation and the budget. Youngkin suggested some cuts to the budget and an additional $300 million to go toward the state’s revenue reserve deposit, which functions as a “rainy day fund.”

“(The reserve) enables us to feel confident that if there is a bump in the road, we can deal with it,” he said last week. “No one should worry about the fact that we would have to come back and cut programs for people or raise taxes on people; that’s just not in the cards because we don’t need to do that.”

Democrats were critical of some of Youngkin’s budget amendments that reduce funding for things like rental assistance. The General Assembly’s budget contained $20 million for pilot rental assistance programs in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, but that provision was struck from the governor’s version…
