High-speed chase through residential area ends in arrest of Eugene man

EUGENE, Ore. – A 37-year-old Eugene man was arrested on Sunday evening following a high-speed pursuit that passed through a River Road area neighborhood and ended in the parking lot of a Highway 99 business, according to the Eugene Police Department.

EPD officials said they received reports of two hit-and-run incidents at 5:02 p.m. on March 30 involving Hyundai Sonata and other calls that reported reckless driving. A police officer spotted the alleged involved vehicle on southbound River Road just north of Horn Lane and pulled over the driver, identified as Andrew Todd Hampton, whom the officer recognized from a previous reckless driving incident back in February, police said. Authorities said that, at that time, Hampton had been in the custody of the officer for several hours at a local hospital. As the officer approached Hampton’s vehicle, Hampton reportedly raced away from the scene through a residential neighborhood, Eugene police officials said. Police said that other officers spotted Hampton at Cornwall Avenue and Northwest Expressway before Hampton ran a solid red light at Irving Road and Northwest Expressway and again on Highway 99 where he continued driving southbound. Officers used their patrol vehicles to stop Hampton by pinning him in the Jerry’s parking lot, Eugene police said.
