My mom has been an American for 79 years. Now she has to prove it to vote? | Letter

My 79-year-old mother, who’s lived in Ohio her whole life, may not be able to vote simply because her legal name changed through marriage 58 years ago. The proposed SAVE Act (House Resolution 22) would require in-person proof of citizenship to register to vote − such as a passport or birth certificate − which many Americans, especially older women, don’t have in matching names. This bill risks disenfranchising millions.

I urge voters to contact their U.S. representative and oppose this unnecessary barrier to voting. Protecting the vote should unite us − not divide us.
