Dana Nessel and other AGs warn against proof of citizenship requirements for voters

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined 17 other Democratic attorneys general in urging U.S. House leaders to oppose a proposed federal law requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote.

Nessel and the other attorneys general in a joint letter Monday warned congressional leaders that the proposed requirements are unnecessary and would instead create barriers to voting access and possibly disenfranchise millions of eligible voters across the country.

“Michigan has fought tirelessly to ensure our elections are fair, accessible and secure,” Nessel said Tuesday, April 1. “The SAVE Act threatens to unravel decades of progress by imposing costly, burdensome voter registration requirements designed not to protect democracy, but to suppress voter turnout. I stand proudly with my colleagues in opposition to H.R. 22, which undermines the fundamental rights of voters.”…
