Odd string of events led to an 1800s historic painting getting recovered in Colorado

A historic painting of George Washington created in the early 1800s has been recovered nearly 15 months after it was allegedly stolen from a Denver metro storage facility in January 2024.

According to the Englewood Police Department, the painting was reportedly stolen from a facility on the 3300 block of Englewood’s South Santa Fe Drive on January 22, 2024. Despite extensive investigative efforts that included work from local law enforcement and the FBI Denver Field Office, whereabouts of the painting remained unknown.

That all changed in March of 2025, however, when a tip delivered through the Crimestoppers platform indicated that multiple people may have been involved in the theft, with a bit more investigative work leading authorities to a person who they believed may still be in possession of the artwork…
