New sushi restaurant to open in downtown Grand Rapids

Studio Park is adding a new Vietnamese sushi restaurant that plans to open by the end of April.

Vel Sushi and Pho is setting up shop in a 1,200-square-foot suite at 122 Oakes St. SW. Owners Anu Sung and her husband, Aceu Thawng, named the new restaurant after their five-month-old son, Vel Thawng. The spot will offer pho, sushi, boba tea and fried rice for lunch and dinner.

Sung and Thawng, both born in Burma, spent several years as franchisees of Hissho Sushi, a sushi restaurant franchise operating sushi counters in Meijer stores throughout Michigan. After living in Grand Rapids for 15 years, the couple moved to Greenwood, Ind. four years ago to open their first restaurant, Roku Sushi and Pho.

But Sung said they always dreamed of opening their own restaurant in Grand Rapids.

“We would always go to downtown, so that is our goal, to open (a restaurant) there,” Sung said…
