American Idol hopeful and Meridian, MS native Jamal Roberts hopes his gamble on a country tune pays off as he vies for a spot in the Top 24.
Roberts, a 27-year-old PE teacher, took a step outside his comfort zone with a rendition of Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” during Hollywood Week’s Showstopper round. Performing at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, Roberts shared his motivation: “I’m doing this for my daughters. I want to show them whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve it.”
While the judges’ critiques were held back until all 62 contestants performed, snippets of their conversation hinted at a mixed reception. Luke Bryan noted Roberts “missed one or two,” while Lionel Richie acknowledged the singer hadn’t quite reached his full potential. Despite this, Roberts felt confident in his performance, stating, “This performance right here, I feel like it already changed my life.”
The “girl dad” of two young daughters, 6-year-old Harmoni and 3-year-old Lyrik, revealed the challenges of balancing parenthood and pursuing a music career. This competition marks the longest time he’s been away from his children. “Being a father is like a roller coaster,” Roberts shared, adding, “I’m doing this for them, so that’s the only thing that keeps me motivated.”
Since his initial audition, Roberts has purchased a house, working to transform it into a home for his daughters. Driven by his desire to provide for his children, Roberts eagerly awaits the results.
