Hundreds of nursing home workers to start picketing

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Hundreds of nursing home workers at long-term care facilities in Western New York will begin picketing on Monday over a lack of progress in contract talks.

This is not a strike, but caregivers at these facilities are taking action to address ongoing concerns about wages, benefits, and staffing levels.

Caregivers at six nursing homes in Erie County and Niagara County said that they will be participating in what union leaders said is just the start of what’s expected to be a much larger campaign as thousands of nursing home workers demand better conditions. These caregivers, represented by 1199SEIU, are calling for fair wages, better health insurance benefits and improved pension plans.
