Man busted for $20K gold bar scam after doorbell cam captures theft

TAMPA, Fla. (CBS12) — A man is accused of stealing over $20,000 worth of gold bars in Tampa, later getting arrested at an airport as he tried to leave the country.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) said on March 6, a UPS driver was approached by a man — 33-year-old Vitalijs Apetenoks — and falsely claimed a package containing the gold bars outside of a home on Aire Place was his.

Doorbell camera video captures the interaction between the driver and the suspect. HCSO said after presenting fraudulent identification, the driver handed over the package, and the theft was later reported by the rightful owner…
