Should King Charles Retire?

Additional Coverage:

King Charles’s recent hospitalization for cancer treatment side effects has sparked concern over his demanding work schedule. While the 76-year-old monarch was released from The London Clinic the same day and briefly postponed events, he quickly returned to his duties, reportedly against the wishes of those closest to him. Queen Camilla, in particular, has expressed worry over her husband’s dedication to his role amidst his health struggles.

Royal author Ingrid Seward echoed these concerns, noting the King’s tireless work ethic. “The trouble is, he’s been so conditioned to work that I don’t think he functions unless he’s working,” Seward stated, adding that the monarch is not one for afternoon naps, despite Queen Camilla’s encouragement.

Seward further suggested delegating some of the King’s more mundane responsibilities, such as meeting with ambassadors, to lighten his load. She believes that reducing these “stifling” and “boring” duties would improve the King’s overall well-being during his cancer treatment. This raises the question of whether Prince William might take on some of these roles in the future.
