Georgia man accused of $20k Walmart shoplifting spree as people ruthlessly mock his name

A Georgia man with a lengthy criminal record has been accused of shoplifting more than $20,000 worth of goods but it’s not the shoplifting spree that has been grabbing people’s attention – it’s his name.

Speedy Gonzalez, which is his real name, was allegedly caught on surveillance footage in March stuffing an empty trash can with other expensive goods before taking it to the self-checkout aisle of a Walmart in Gainesville in what investigators say was a simple tactic to conceal theft .

Authorities allege that in a string of shoplifting incidents, Gonzalez, 40, would stuff high-priced, smaller items into larger containers but would only pay for the large item at checkout. “Nicotine, gum, diabetic strips, you know, high-priced items, although smaller in nature,” Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook told Fox 5 .

“He would then pick out an item from the shelf, such as a trash can. In one instance, it was a mailbox… Then take all those items, stick it into the box with the larger item, and then take that, pay for it, and walk out of the store,” Holbrook explained…
