Leesburg man claims he left crash scene because he didn’t see any damage

A Leesburg man has been arrested after leaving the scene of a crash, claiming he did not see any damage.

A trooper was dispatched to a crash, later found to involve 67-year-old Calvin John Rather, at 12 p.m. Monday, March 31, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol. When he arrived on scene, only one vehicle and its driver were present.

The driver advised that after the crash happened, the other driver, Rather, left without exchanging information, the report said. He showed the trooper a video of what happened moments after the crash which involved the driver pulling up to Rather’s vehicle. Rather was seen on the video stating, “I can’t stay.”

Moments later, Rather left the scene. The license plate was visible as he did so, and a check of the number revealed the vehicle was a 2013 Kia Rio that matched the description of the vehicle in the video. The owner was confirmed to be Rather whose picture in a law enforcement database matched the driver who left the scene, the report said…
