ASD superintendent stresses crucial education bill to avoid cuts to staff, special programs

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The superintendent of Alaska’s largest school district stressed the importance of an education bill in Juneau that he says will prevent larger class sizes and cuts to teaching positions and special education programs.

Speaking Tuesday night at the Anchorage School Board meeting, Anchorage School District Superintendent Dr. Jharrett Bryantt railed against the lack of a sizeable boost to the state’s per-student funding formula — called the Base Student Allocation (BSA) — in the past decade.

The superintendent called it a legislator’s “constitutional obligation” to provide enough education funding for school districts to avoid cutting crucial programs and maintain appropriate teacher-to-pupil ratios…
