Stowe, Vermont — Escape to the Hills! A Real-Life Sound of Music Family Retreat

The hills are alive… with the sound of delighted guests! The von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort, nestled in the picturesque ski town of Stowe, Vermont, offers a charming escape with a unique history. Founded by the real-life von Trapp family, whose story inspired “The Sound of Music,” this lodge continues to thrive 75 years later.

A December visit revealed a delightful blend of old-world charm and modern amenities. The lodge, rebuilt in Austrian style after a fire in 1980, now boasts 96 rooms, plus luxurious villas and chalets.

During my stay, my family enjoyed a spacious, renovated Superior King Room, complete with a balcony overlooking snowy landscapes. A sweet surprise awaited us upon arrival: the lodge’s signature “Cow Cake,” a whimsical tribute to the resident herd of Scottish Highland cows.

The von Trapp legacy is woven into every detail, from family photos adorning the walls to carpets mimicking Austrian woodcraft. A highlight was the Family History Talk, led by Sam von Trapp, son of Maria and Captain von Trapp’s youngest child. The talk offered fascinating insights into the family’s journey from Austria to America.

Dining at the lodge was a treat. The main dining room offered a cozy ambiance, complete with a pianist playing Christmas carols.

The menu featured both traditional Austrian dishes and American favorites. The standout for me?

A perfectly cooked filet mignon. The next morning, a breakfast buffet offered Vermont maple syrup so good it tasted like heaven.

We also sampled the von Trapp Brewery’s offerings, including a smooth Dunkel and a crisp Kölsch.

The brewery, located down the road, also houses a bierhall where we enjoyed a second dinner. My husband savored the Johannesburger, a burger made from the lodge’s own Highland cows, while I sampled a bratwurst platter. Speaking of cows, we participated in the “Meet the Cows” excursion, a fun (though perhaps better suited for older children) opportunity to get up close with these adorable creatures.

The lodge truly embraces the holiday spirit, with themed Christmas trees scattered throughout the property and festive activities like ornament-making classes.

Whether you’re a “Sound of Music” aficionado or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort offers a unique and memorable experience. With its cozy accommodations, delicious food, and charming atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to create your own family’s special memories.
