Mission attorneys file new motion to remove paralyzed patient from hospital

Attorneys for Mission Hospital have filed a motion requesting a judge appoint a referee in the case of Eric Penland Jr., a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic patient who’s remained at the hospital for nearly four years.

According to the April 8 motion, his mother, Tiffany Dobbs, shouldn’t be able to leave jail until she provides documents and information facilitating his discharge from Mission.

Dobbs has been in the Buncombe County Detention Center since April 1 partly because she didn’t comply with a judge’s 2024 order to remove her son from the hospital…
