Gulch neighbors call for bond reform after deadly crash involving stolen vehicle

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Two people were killed in a deadly crash in the Gulch last Friday, and now neighbors are calling for change.

Metro Police have identified the suspected driver as 37-year-old George Chaney, a convicted felon with a lengthy arrest history. Chaney was out on bond following an arrest last month for allegedly stealing a car and leading officers on a high-speed chase.

Police say that around 2:40 a.m. Friday, Chaney was behind the wheel of a stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee when he ran a red light and crashed into a taxicab at 12th Avenue and Demonbreun Street. A man and woman in the back seat of the taxi were killed in the impact. The cab driver survived.

Investigators say the Jeep had been stolen from a garage in Berry Hill back in February and was spray-painted black to avoid being recognized. After the crash, Chaney tried to flee on foot but collapsed due to his injuries. He remains hospitalized and is expected to face charges once released…
