Ex-Palo Verde coach’s bail now $2M after new abuse charges filed

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The bail for an ex-volunteer coach at Palo Verde High School was increased to $2 million after new charges were filed against him for allegedly sexually abusing children.

Michael “Luke” Atwell, 73, is facing 11 counts of lewdness with a child and one count of sexual assault against a child under 14, according to court documents. These charges are in addition to the more than 30 other charges for the same alleged crimes filed in November 2024.

He was initially taken into custody in November after a person reported to Metro police that Atwell sexually assaulted a child when the child was between the ages of 11 and 14, documents said. The child was known to Atwell and did not appear to be in his care at any school, according to the report.
