Minnesota Governor Tim Walz reignited his feud with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, calling for the billionaire to be “demonized” during a recent town hall meeting in Youngstown, Ohio.
Speaking on the topic of social media and perceptions of wealth within the Democratic Party, Walz cautioned against creating a “false narrative” that everyone is rich. He then pivoted to a direct attack on Musk. “What we should demonize is someone like Elon Musk,” Walz declared, seemingly contradicting his earlier statement that success shouldn’t be demonized.
Walz’s comments mark an escalation in his ongoing back-and-forth with Musk. The exchange began last month when Walz jokingly referred to checking Tesla’s stock price for “a little boost.”
Musk retorted with a jab about Walz’s failed vice presidential bid in 2024. The White House also weighed in, mocking Walz’s initial comment about Tesla’s stock.
The Governor’s “demonize” comment seems to stem from a broader point about wealth and taxes. “What my beef is,” Walz explained, “once you get successful, don’t be a greedy bastard and not pay your taxes.” This suggests his criticism of Musk may be rooted in perceived tax avoidance, although he didn’t offer specifics during the town hall.
