A legendary California estate that is almost 140 years old, famous for reportedly hosting some of the most influential names of the past century-plus, is for sale.
The Holtby Estate is a little over 1.5 acres and features a main home and three guest buildings in the heart of the Oleander District, a long-established tree-lined neighborhood just blocks from downtown Bakersfield . And it can be yours for just under $1.4 million.
The home has a long history of making headlines when it finds its way to the market. It was considered historic even in the early 1940s, when it was first put up for sale by the family of the original owners.
“Sale of the 50-year-old Holtby residence at 701 Oleander avenue, one of Bakersfield’s best-known landmarks, was announced today by Mrs. Rowland T. Morgan, the daughter of a pioneer Kern agriculturalist, Robert M. Holtby, who built the residence in 1890,” the Bakersfield Californian reported on March 28, 1941. “New owner of the property is W.B.
