Retailers in Stanton, California, may soon be prohibited from selling nitrous oxide, commonly known as whippets, for recreational use. The city council voted unanimously on Tuesday to introduce an ordinance that would ban the sale of whippets except for specific uses such as medical, dental, automotive, or food-related applications. This proposal follows a similar law passed by Orange County Supervisors in February, which also prohibits the recreational sale of nitrous oxide.
If the ordinance is enacted, retailers violating the law could face fines of up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both. Additionally, violators risk having their business licenses revoked. According to a staff report , the ordinance aims to close a loophole in state law that allows the sale of nitrous oxide without verifying its intended use.
