Former Sentara employee sues over a policy that deducts 30 minutes of pay every shift

NORFOLK, Va. — A former Sentara Health patient care employee is suing the company, claiming she and certain other hourly employees were underpaid.

Jasmine Ward worked at Sentara for a little over two years on an hourly payroll. During her time of employment, she claims she would maybe get one break a week, depending on how busy the shift was. On days when she did not take a lunch break, Sentara still deducted 30 minutes from her timecard for a meal break.

“I tried to clock out as ‘no lunch’ a few times,” Ward explained, “you get approached by your manager and told that’s not allowed.”…
