New Orleans Ramps Up Mosquito Control Efforts in Lower 9th Ward and Holy Cross Amid Rising Concerns

The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) is set to launch a larval mosquito abatement operation via truck this evening, with the intention to combat the early life stages of mosquitoes. According to an announcement by the NOMTRCB, the treatments will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting, and will concentrate on the Lower 9th Ward and Holy Cross areas, outlined by Florida Ave., N. Peters St., Sister St., & Delery St. This initiative comes in wake of the recent heavy rainfall that has led to the pooling of water, catalyzing ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

NOMTRCB is now urging residents to take proactive steps in reducing the mosquito population by tipping or throwing away receptacles that can collect water, which serve as breeding grounds for these pests. As stated in a recent report by NOMTRCB, “Tip over or toss out any items that hold water to prevent mosquito breeding.” Other recommended measures include aeration of permanent water bodies, using fine mesh to screen water collection devices, and scrupulously inspecting properties weekly for standing water.

With the peak of mosquito season approaching, New Orleans citizens are advised to lessen their exposure to mosquitoes. Consider limiting outdoor activities during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are the most active. Furthermore, residents should make sure to use air conditioning or fans, maintain window and door screens, and apply insect repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients like DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
