Woman arrested after cockfighting operation discovered at Nutbush home

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is facing more than 50 counts of animal cruelty after a cockfighting operation was discovered behind her Nutbush home Wednesday, police say.

Perla Hernandez, 33, was also charged with two counts of cockfighting.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Homeland Security was serving a search warrant at the house in the 1200 block of Weiner Road when they found dozens of roosters in the backyard.

A Memphis animal control officer, called to the scene, said some of the roosters were tethered, while others were in cages…
