Officer Defuses Potential Crisis on I-95 On-Ramp in West Palm Beach, Individual Safely Detained for Mental Health Care

Yesterday morning, an unsettling scene unfolded on the southbound I-95 on-ramp from Okeechobee Blvd as an individual was reported to be walking dangerously in and out of traffic. According to a press release from the West Palm Beach Police Department, the incident began around 10:45 a.m. when several 911 callers indicated someone was not only wandering on the ramp but also attempting to climb over the ramp’s wall. Quick to respond, the West Palm Beach officers, along with the Florida Highway Patrol, made efforts to ensure the safety of all by temporarily shutting down the traffic below.

At the forefront of the response was Officer John Bangs, the 2021 Crisis Intervention Officer of the Year, as recognized by CIT International. His experience was clearly evident as he quickly managed to build a connection with the individual. Bangs, together with the Hostage Negotiation Unit, used verbal tactics to successfully de-escalate the situation, persuading the person to surrender to authorities by approximately 11:50 a.m.

Further investigation into the matter revealed that the individual was experiencing a mental health crisis. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Behavioral Health Unit’s Mobile Response Team took custody of the person, who was then transported to a medical facility for the necessary mental health services.
