With backing of 14 Staten Island civic groups, D.A. calls for change to evidence discovery laws

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In a letter sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams and other city and state officials, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon presented widespread local support for reform to the state’s discovery laws.

All three of Staten Island’s Community Boards and many of the borough’s civic associations have expressed their support for Hochul’s proposal to reform discovery laws, according to McMahon’s letter.

While McMahon acknowledges the “admirable” intent of the 2019 discovery statute, he contests that the current law has resulted in the dismissal of “thousands of cases” across the state due to technicalities and loopholes and “a serious decline in morale” in district attorney offices throughout New York…
