From the archives: A candle factory sparks protest in a Wilmington neighborhood

In the early 1980s, an inner-city business loan became more than giving money to help a place open.

According to an article in the April 13, 1983, Wilmington Morning Star, the Wilmington City Council approved a $10,000 loan for a candle factory at Sixth and Brunswick streets. The factory’s location was met with objections from many in the Brooklyn neighborhood.

A spokesperson for Brooklyn residents said it would reduce property values and be a nuisance for homeowners…
