LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A ridge of high pressure continues to dominate the region, setting the stage for record-breaking heat on Sunday, before a cool down next week.
Forecast highs for Sunday are pushing well into the 90s, with Lubbock expected to top out around 96 degrees, breaking the previous record of 91 degrees. In Childress, highs could hit 98 degrees, edging past a daily record.
Some areas are forecasted to close in on the triple-digit mark across the Rolling Plains. Here are the earliest 100 degree days at select towns across our area.
But this heat won’t last long.
A cold front is currently sitting just north of the Oklahoma Panhandle and set to sweep through our area Sunday night into Monday morning. Behind it? A much cooler air mass that could knock down high temperatures down 20 to 25 degrees by Monday afternoon.
The front will also bring strong winds out of the northeast, with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph expected Monday morning.
Monday’s highs will be around seasonal norms, likely in the upper 60s to low 70s…
