SIERRA NEVADA, CA — Beavers are back in California’s watersheds, including sites in the Sierra Nevada, as part of a bold restoration effort by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Between October 2023 and September 2024, 28 beavers were released at five sites through partnerships with the Tule River Tribe in Southern California and the Maidu Summit Consortium in Northern California’s Tásmam Koyóm valley.
These translocated beavers have built dams, expanded wetland habitats, and produced litters, boosting biodiversity and climate resilience. At one site, surface water increased by 23%.…
