California to begin removing ‘obsolete’ toll plaza booths from bridges beginning in 2025

RICHMOND, CA — The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is set to become the first of seven Bay Area toll bridges to remove its toll booths by the end of May, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). This transition to open-road tolling will streamline traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks.

Officials explained that, while construction work is expected to begin this summer, drivers won’t see major changes until the toll booths are fully removed. The project, which includes installing overhead gantries to collect tolls, is slated to be completed by early 2026.
