Idaho’s supply of homes for extremely low income renters down from 2024, per national report

Renters with the lowest incomes nationwide are facing the crunch as housing options they can afford continue to shrink, including in Idaho.

A new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition and the Idaho Asset Building Network found Idaho ranks 36th in the nation for the number of rentals available to extremely low-income Americans making 30% of the area median income or below. This translates to an annual income of $20,600 for a single person in Boise.

Nationwide, the nonprofit says the country has a 7.1 million shortage in rental homes available to extremely low-income Americans. Every state and major metropolitan area has a shortage of rentals affordable to the poorest Americans, with an average of 35 available and affordable rentals for every 100 extremely low-income renters. Idaho falls nearly on this average with 34 available and affordable rentals for those in this income bracket…
