Once a sleepy, rural area in eastern North Carolina, Pender County has seen an explosion of growth over the past three decades and has contributed to the growth in the southeastern part of the state. Here are seven things to know about Pender County.
1. Pender County was founded in 1875.
The county began at an area known as Rich Inlet, located on the Atlantic Ocean with Foy Creek, Island Creek, Fishing Creek, and the Cape Fear and Black rivers serving as its borders. The county marked its 150 th anniversary on Feb. 16, 2025.
2. The county is named for William D. Pender.
William D. Pender was a Confederate Army General who was severely wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and died as a result of his injuries.
