If you’re sending your tax return by U.S. mail, avoid this one mistake

If you are among the small minority of taxpayers who’ve waited until April 15 to mail your tax returns — rather than e-file them — don’t wait until Tuesday night to execute your eleventh-hour plan.

Long gone are the days when a few post offices in some of Oregon’s most populous areas — including Portland — would collect and postmark federal and state tax returns as late as 11:59 p.m. on Tax Day.

“I remember the people in the TV news used to have a crew out there for the 10 o’clock news,” said Robin Maxey, a spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Revenue. “On Tax Day, people lined up in their cars and handed over their paper returns to a postal employee.”…
