Erie Insurance plants 100th tree to celebrate 100th anniversary

This month marks Erie Insurance’s 100th anniversary. Wednesday morning, company leaders gathered for a fitting observation of the occasion.

The final tree of its 100 Tree Project was planted on the downtown Erie campus. The 10-foot colonial spirit elm will grow in front of the Thomas B. Hagan building.

Over the last two years, Erie Insurance has planted 100 shade trees along East 5th and 6th Streets between French and Parade Streets.

“One of the things that has happened over time, not just with us in our neighborhood but throughout the city, is a lot of trees have been taken down, so we thought, and we thought let’s plant 100 trees in anticipation of our 100th anniversary. And we just planted the 100th tree,” said Tom Hagen, chairman of Erie Insurance.

The colonial elm was chosen because it is a native tree that grows well in urban environments. 1,900 trees were also distributed to Erie Insurance employees to plant around the company’s 12-state footprint…
