A measure that would increase Oakland’s sales tax by a half-cent to reduce the city’s budget deficit passed Tuesday.
In early returns, the ballot measure had more than 64% of the vote and raises the sales tax from 10.25% to 10.75% — one of the highest rates in the state. The measure, which required a simple majority to pass, is expected to bring in up to $30 million a year in revenue.
