3 kidnappers dead, East Tennessee pastor rescued following shootout with South African police

MOTHERWELL, South Africa — An East Tennessee pastor is safe after a shootout with police resulted in three of his alleged kidnappers dead, according to a spokesperson with the South African Police Service.

South African police Lt. Colonel Avele Fumba confirmed to 10News that the man rescued was Josh Sullivan, 34, a missionary from East Tennessee who was kidnapped last week. Fumba said Sullivan wasn’t injured.

According to police, officers followed up on a tip at a house in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha and spotted a vehicle with the suspects inside. Police said the suspects saw the officers and attempted to drive away, while also firing at the officers in what they called a “high-intensity shootout.” Police said officers fired back, killing the three suspects in the car…
