Flying in May? You must have Real ID at airport. Here’s how to check your Colorado ID

After years of false starts, the federal government is set to begin requiring the use of identification cards that meet heightened standards for identity verification and fraud prevention.

Starting May 7, the Transportation Security Administration will not accept state-issued identification that is not Real ID compliant. The 9/11 Commission recommended the standards in 2005, but implementation of the requirements was repeatedly delayed. A Real ID will also be needed to enter certain federal facilities.

The good news for the vast majority of Colorado residents is that they already have a Real ID , as long as it was issued or renewed over the past dozen years. But there are quick and easy ways to confirm you’re carrying the right card.

What is a Real ID?

These are identification cards that meet certain standards of identity verification spelled out in federal law, including a review of documents that prove identity and citizenship or legal status. Starting May 7, any travelers age 18 or older at airports will be required to have one to fly.
