‘Here we go again,’ | Western NC photographer reflects on wild months of weather

MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. — People in Western North Carolina have seen it all from the weather in recent months. The headline, of course, is Hurricane Helene and the lingering damage left in the mountains. Winter brought rounds of snow. Now, the area faces more wildfires. Thomas Mabry has had a unique vantage point for it all.

The man living in Asheville spends a lot of his time hiking and taking pictures. As he treks around the mountains these days, he’s had plenty to capture.

“This is documentation. This is history,” Mabry said. “One of the things that I want to do is to contribute to Western North Carolina, Appalachian, North Carolina history by documenting these areas that were devastated by Helene and last night’s fire.”…
