Californians are no strangers to earthquakes. But when a recent 5.2-magnitude quake rocked Southern California, cameras captured what happens to pets when the ground starts to shake. Reaction to the earthquake, centered in San Diego County, was caught on camera as one family’s dogs are seen scurrying around their home and running to safety. What’s most notable about the footage is just how loud the quake is. Though minimal damage and no injuries were reported, the shocking footage shows how terrifying an earthquake is for pets.
Dogs have long-since been rumored to be able to anticipate earthquakes. Some dog owners report their pet pooch exhibits anxiety prior to an earthquake, while other dogs are reported to become anxious days before a quake strikes. Scientists have yet to prove the anecdotes true but guess that if dogs do show anxiety prior to an earthquake, it’s in response to their ability to hear seismic activity.
If you do experience an earthquake with your dog, know they might be so anxious they don’t want to be picked up and carried to safety. If that’s the case, try getting on the ground at their level before leading them to safety under a sturdy piece of furniture or doorway.
