WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita man was sentenced Wednesday to 17 years in prison following a violent encounter with police that ended in a crash and left a Wichita officer with serious injuries.
Nicholas Shugart, 42, was sentenced by Judge Tyler Roush after being convicted of multiple charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, battery, distribution of drugs, criminal possession of a weapon, fleeing law enforcement with reckless driving, and driving under the influence.

The charges stem from an incident on August 24, 2024, when Wichita police officers responded to a suspicious vehicle report near 30th Street South and McLean. Officers found Shugart and a woman asleep inside. As an officer approached the vehicle, police say Shugart fled, knocking the officer down and driving over his leg.
A high-speed pursuit followed, ending near 15th and Meridian in north Wichita. Shugart crashed into another vehicle after running a stop sign. He and a 27-year-old female passenger were taken into custody at the scene…
