Dream Vacation Turns All-Inclusive Skeptic into Believer

From All-Inclusive Skeptic to Island Convert: A Luxurious Surprise

For years, I avoided all-inclusive resorts like the plague. Crowded beaches, endless buffet lines, and over-chlorinated pools?

No thanks. Then, a twist of fate landed me in an all-inclusive in Belize.

Two months later, another all-inclusive trip to Panama sealed the deal: My perception of this vacation style was completely wrong.

My Belizean adventure began with a quest for the quintessential overwater bungalow. Thatch Caye, a private island resort off the coast of Dangriga, offered exactly that.

For around $950 a night (media rate), my friend and I enjoyed a premier overwater bungalow, complete with sunset views from our private hammock and the soothing sounds of the ocean at night. Meals, drinks, boat transfers, and water sports equipment were all included.

The intimate setting, limited to 30 guests, allowed us to connect with fellow travelers, a welcome change from the anonymity of larger resorts. While there was a buffet, meals were served at set times, adding a touch of structure to our island escape.

We spent our days paddleboarding, scuba diving (additional cost), and savoring cocktails perched above the turquoise water.

Two months later, I found myself at Isla Palenque, a five-star all-inclusive island off Panama’s coast. With eight beachfront casitas, seven private beaches, and a daily rate of about $980 for two (media rate), this resort promised an even more luxurious experience.

And it delivered. Isla Palenque offered a level of privacy that even Thatch Caye couldn’t match.

I enjoyed solitary mornings on pristine beaches and explored the coastline by paddleboard. Complimentary daily activities, like yoga and snorkeling excursions, added to the allure.

The food was exceptional, featuring multi-course meals and an all-day menu for those in-between cravings. The spacious casita, complete with a luxurious outdoor bathroom, provided the perfect sanctuary.

A year later, Isla Palenque remains etched in my memory. The pristine beaches, lush jungles, thoughtfully curated activities, and gracious staff made it an unforgettable experience.

The all-inclusive aspect? Just the icing on the cake.

While I’m eager to explore other Central American all-inclusives, Isla Palenque has earned a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to return.
