MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) crews are shutting down two steel gas pipelines Thursday morning near its facility in Westwood, and officials are warning residents not to be alarmed if they smell a strange odor.
Crews will go to work around 8 a.m. and may continue until 5 p.m. or until they eliminate the gas from both pipelines. Those in the area might smell mercaptan — a chemical odorant added to natural gas, creating a rotten egg and sulfur smell to make it easy to discover.
“This work is part of the Weaver-Gill Project, a $30 million modernization initiative to improve the pipeline distribution of natural gas in South Memphis,” MLGW officials said in a press release…
