Toledo residents continue to demand answers following the brutal murder of 13-year-old Kei’Mani Latigue, whose death has exposed potential gaps in the child protection system. The teenager’s body was discovered in an abandoned building on March 24 after being reported missing nearly a week earlier, sending shockwaves through the Ohio community and prompting calls for institutional reform.
According to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, Kei’Mani’s cause of death was multiple deep cuts to her neck, with her manner of death ruled a homicide. Her father, 33-year-old Darnell Jones, has been charged with murder, felonious assault, and abduction in connection with her death.
The tragedy has sparked intense scrutiny of Lucas County Children Services (LCCS), which revealed it had received three reports regarding Kei’Mani’s care dating back to 2023. Despite these reports, LCCS stated that investigations “found no evidence that would lead to the removal of Kei’Mani from the home,” according to a press release .
